Speaking: Task 1

Activity 1

Hello, students. How are you?
Today, we will do some exercises on speaking. First, please look at the picture below.



Do you know what kind of food is in those pictures?
Have you ever made it?
How does it taste?

Tell us your experience of making this food, and how it tastes. Then, please make a recording of it.



Activity 2
If you tell your friends how to make/do something, your series of instructions is called PROCEDURE. We have studied this text last week. However, I have some supplement for you. Here are some expressions showing the chronological order of steps.

1. First, ... Second, ... Third, ... etc.
2. Next, ...
3. After that, ...
4. Then, ...
5. Now, ...




Activity 3


Read the dialogue below.

Tommy : Mom, would you help me?
Mom : What is it, Tom?

Tommy : I want to have chocolate sandwich for breakfast, but I don’t know how to make it.

Mom : You need to prepare some ingredients.

Tommy : What are they, Mom?

Mom : 1 tbsp. milk, large egg, 2 oz. semisweet chocolate bar, 2 slices bread, 1 tbsp. unsalted butter, Confectioners’ sugar, Ice cream

Tommy : Then, what we have to do first?

Mom : Whisk the milk and egg in the shallow bowl.

Tommy : Ok, Mom. What’s next?

Mom : Place the chocolate between two slices of bread.

Tommy : I want to have a lot of chocolate here.

Mom : Do not extend the chocolate over the bread, Tom. Then, dip the sandwich into the egg mixture.

Tommy : What will we do with the butter, Mom?

Mom : Heat the butter in a skillet over medium heat to cook your sandwich.

Tommy : I’ll cook my sandwich.

Mom : Don’t cook it too long, Tom. Flip it with the spatula until the bread is golden brown.

Tommy : Look, Mom. The chocolate is melted.

Mom : Right. Now, put it on your plate. Dust your sandwich with confectioners’ sugar and serve it alongside your favorite ice cream.

Tommy : Voila. This is Tommy’s chocolate sandwich. Thank you, Mom.

Mom : Anytime, my sweetheart.



Practice it with your friend next to you. Then, make a recording of it

EURO-TALK: SPEAKING SOFTWARE PROVIDER

This website provides many softwares for teaching speaking. Teachers may choose the softwares they need and pick it up. The softwares cannot be downloaded. We have to order first and then the CD/DVD of the softwares will arrive several days later. However, they need to pay for it. All softwares provided in this websites are not for free.

For some teachers, this website may be useless for it needs money to pick up softwares from it. On the other hand, some other teachers who realizes that the softwares provided in this site are excellent will think that this is a very useful softwares.

I think that it doesn’t matter how much money we spend for buying those softwares. The most important thing is that we, as teachers, must provide the best teaching process for our students. Hopefully, this website would help you.

PROCEDURE TEXT

Definition of Procedure.


Procedure is a text that show a process in order. Its social function is to describe how something is completely done through a sequence of series.


1. Generic Structure of Procedure.
a. Goal: Showing the purpose
b. Material: Telling the needed materials
c. Step 1-end: Describing the steps to achieve the purpose


Language Feature of Procedure.


a. Using temporal conjunction
b. Using action verb
c. Using imperative sentence
d. Using Simple Present Tense


Here is the example of a procedure text:

Planting Chilies
Planting is a nice activity in our spare time. The following is guided information on how to plant a chili-plant easily. Here are the steps. Firstly, dry a handful seeding under the sunlight. Secondly, put the seeding on the soil. It should be in an open area. Next, wait it. There will come out the sprout after that let it be bigger.
Finally, put it in another big pot. It will soon grow bigger and bigger and yield us some fresh chilies soon.

Analyzing the Text
Generic Structure Analysis
a) Goal; informing on how to plant chillies.
b) Material; excluded
c) Steps; showing the steps or method in planting chillies; from drying seed to putting the sprout in big pot.

Language Feature Analysis
a) Imperative sentences; dry a handful seeding, put it, etc
b) Action verb; put, dry, etc
c) Temporal conjunction; next, finally, firstly, secondly
d) Simple present tense pattern; planting is a nice activity, the following is a guided information



Here is another example of procedure text:

How to Make Bregedel Tempe (Tempe Fritters)

Ingredients:

1) 150 g tempe
2) 2 tablespoons fried shallots
3) 3 kaffir lime leaves
4) 1 tablespoon flour
5) 1 egg
6) 1 cup vegetable oil for frying

Spice paste:
1) 3 large chilies, seeds removed
2) 3 small chilies
3) 2 red shallots
4) 2 cloves garlic
5) 1/2 teaspoon chopped galangal
6) 1 candle nut
7) 1/2 teaspoon coriander seeds
8) 1/2 teaspoon salt
9) 1/4 teaspoon shrimp paste

1) Mash the tempe with a fork or place in the bowl of a food processor and blend until it resembles coarse bread crumbs.
2) Grind the spices in a mortar and pestle or place in the bowl of a food processor and blend to a smooth paste.
3) Put the mashed tempe in a bowl and mix with the spice paste, fried shallots and lime leaves. Stir in the flour, followed by the egg.
4) Shape the tempe into fritters the size of a golf ball and flatten a little with a fork.
5) Heat the vegetable oil in a wok over a medium flame. When the oil is hot, drop the fritters into the oil, five or six at a time.
6) Fry until golden brown on both sides, drain on absorbent paper and serve hot with rice.
